This Thierry Mugler leather jacket from the Fall/Winter 1989 "Hiver Buick" collection is constructed in black leather with a cropped, cinched silhouette drawn from the highly-stylized American cars of the Space Age. The front features a ribbed fan panel, an asymmetric zip closure with a spike zipper pull, chrome grille-inspired hardware at the hip, and a round chrome medallion at the chest, while the grid-quilted sleeves are lined with chrome spike hardware along the cuffs. Versions debuted on the season's runway on Roberta Chirko and in numerous campaigns. The collection was inspired by automotive designer Harley Earl, who worked with free-form sketches and hand-carved clay models and authorized Franklin Quick Hershey's aerospace-inspired tail-fins on the 1948 Cadillac.
